Ajax sent Rangers a firm message that they're not messing around as they kept their flying start to the Eredivisie season going with a thumping 4-0 win over Cambuur.
The two sides meet in their Champions League opener during the week with the Gers heading to Amsterdam hoping to bounce back from a derby day thumping against Celtic, losing by the same scoreline as Ajax' opponents. They're hoping to build on an impressive European campaign last season and it will be another homecoming of sorts for Gio van Bronckhorst after they eliminated PSV in the playoff round.
The Amsterdam team lost manager Erik ten Hag to Manchester United in the summer while key men Lisandro Martinez and Antony also headed to Old Trafford. That's in addition to losing Ryan Gravenberch to Bayern Munich and Sebastian Haller, who joined Borussia Dortmund. If their rhythm has been disrupted, though, they're doing a good job of hiding it.
New recruits Calvin Bassey and Steven Bergwijn were heavily involved as they made it five wins from five to start the season. Bergwijn, a summer arrival from Spurs, got them off to a flyer with a first-half double before Deyvne Rensch and Mohammed Kudus struck in the second half - the latter assisted by Bassey following a charge forward from centre-back.
Attentions now turn to Wednesday when Bassey will be reunited with his old teammates as a refreshed Rangers team look to get back on their feet. And they might need to get back on their feet with a clash with Aberdeen looming just three days later.
