Glasgow Airport is closed due to a ‘suspicious item’ left in the terminal.
The Paisley Daily Express understands that parts of the building have been evacuated and passengers are being ushered into the car park outside.
Police are at the scene and there are reports of bomb disposal units arriving at the airport.
AGS Airports, the company that manages the Glasgow terminal confirmed that the concern was regarding “an item in a passenger’s bag in the central search area” around 6am this morning.
A spokesperson added: “The terminal’s check-in and central search areas are closed due to an ongoing incident and passengers have been moved outside the building to our covered car park.
“We are liaising with Police Scotland on site and will provide a further update when we can.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said earlier this morning: "Police and emergency services are currently in attendance at an ongoing incident at Glasgow Airport. The terminal building has been closed as a precaution, however, not evacuated. No further details available at this time."
However, passengers at the airport told the Paisley Daily Express that they have been removed from areas of the building where police are present and have been taken outside. Elderly, disabled, and child travellers have been taken into hotels for respite from the cold and others have been given blankets to wear.
And police have since released an updated statement on their social media channels, which reads: "Around 5.55am on Monday, December 5, police were called to a report of a suspicious item within the security search hall of Glasgow Airport.
"As a precaution and in accordance with procedures, the check-in and security hall areas were closed to the public.
"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is in attendance and a cordon is now in place.
"Staff and members of the public have been moved from the check-in area to the multi-storey car park.
"Police and emergency services remain at the scene. No further details at this time."
Passengers also said that communication about what’s going on from the airport has been minimal.
Matthew Brannagan was due to board a flight to Berlin at 9.40am but was still waiting outside in an airport car park at 9.35 this morning.
He said: “We got here at 7am and got told no one in and no one out. We then got taken inside about 20 minutes later, after then standing for 30 minutes the police and airport staff came in and were shouting evacuate the airport.
"We then got told to go to the very back of car park 2 and have been here ever since. They’ve gave out water and blankets and stuff but no updates from anyone at all.”
Inverclyde politician, Ronnie Cowan, was one of those also caught up in the chaos this morning.
He tweeted: “Glasgow airport still appears to be closed. Fire brigades outside. No information being provided for passengers queuing outside.”
