Airdrieonians face SFA probe over Rico Quitongo race discrimination claims as governing body takes strong stance

The SFA have launched an investigation into Rico Quitongo's claims of race discrimination at Airdrieonians.

Quitongo stated that he was racially abused by a Diamonds supporter during a goalless draw with Queen's Park last September.

The League One side launched an investigation into the claim before it was dropped the following month citing "insufficient evidence."

The 22-year-old would leave New Broomfield for Peterhead in January following the conclusion.

An employment tribunal is now investigating the case and Quitongo with PFA Scotland union and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

The Scottish football authorities are now also examining the conduct of the club.

A SFA statement read: "The Scottish FA has initiated an investigation into race discrimination claims made by Rico Quitongo against his former club, Airdrieonians FC.

"We are aware that an employment tribunal claim has been raised by the player, supported by PFA Scotland and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, and await the outcome of that tribunal.

"The Scottish FA condemns all forms of racist and discriminatory behaviour. Indeed, our Equality Vision states that 'everybody should have the opportunity to participate in football at all levels, and that no individual should be discriminated against'."

The EHRC are part funding the case through the race discrimination fund and Margaret Gribbon, solicitor at Bridge Employment Solicitors representing Quitongo, said: “Rico is strongly committed to pursuing this legal claim in an effort to ensure that no other footballer experiences what he has."
