Midfielder Charlie Telfer admits Airdrie lacked quality all over the park as they fell to a late defeat at Kelty Hearts on Saturday - and insists they must be braver at Montrose tonight.
It took an 85th minute strike from Alfredo Agyeman to separate the Fifers from the Diamonds at New Central Park at the weekend nd that saw Airdrie slip to third in League One, leaving them two points behind leaders Dunfermline and one adrift of second place Edinburgh City going into tonight’s re-arranged clash at Links Park.
Rhys McCabe’s men could muster just three shots on target in the whole match, with assistant boss Callum Fordyce coming closest when he had a goal-bound effort hooked over the bar by a Kelty defender in the 10th minute before sending a volley narrowly over the bar.
And Telfer felt they deserved nothing from the game after a lacklustre display in Fife.
“We knew Kelty were going to be resolute at the back, aggressive, so we needed to have a bit more quality to break them down, and show a bit more quality in the final third, but we didn’t do that enough,” he said.
“We know you have to be smart and break teams down but we also know if you give teams a chance – and they had a couple of chances – they are going to take it.
“So we need to be smart and I think we just lacked a bit of quality all over the park. I think we were too open and the gaps were far too big. We showed bits, but not enough to win the game and, to be honest, we probably didn’t deserve anything from the game.”
The result inflicted back-to-back defeats for the Diamonds, following another late goal concession away to Alloa Athletic in their loss at the Indodrill on September 23 in the third round of the SPFL Trust Trophy.
Airdrie are in Montrose tonight before facing seventh-place Queen of the South at home on Saturday.
And Telfer says they need to show more against teh Gable Endies. He added: “There’s so many games in the league that we just need to move on, but remember the disappointment and how it feels.
“We need to be a bit more aggressive, but we also need to have a bit more bravery on the ball and a bit more quality defending our own box and also attacking the other box.”
