Airdrie hat-trick hero happy for Calum Gallagher to steal limelight with wonder goal

Gabby McGill grabbed his first career hat-trick in a 6-1 thrashing of Kelty - but he was happy for strike partner Calum Gallagher to steal the limelight with the goal of the game.

And McGill reckons Gallagher has a new trademark move after his delightful spin that led to him firing in Airdrie's fifth.

The Diamonds ended a run of four games without a win to hammer sorry Hearts, with McGill grabbing a treble, Jack Milne netting an own goal, Gallagher finding the target and Calum Smith completing the scoring for the hosts, before Jamie Barjonas scored a consolation from the penalty spot late on.

Not only was Gallagher's solo effort – which also saw him sprint down the field and nutmeg his opponent with a piece of trickery - the talk of New Broomfield on Saturday, it has racked up over 200,000 views after being shared across social media.

Englishman McGill said: "Gal can steal the limelight, that's fine. I love him to pieces but I did not see that coming.

"Once the turn did happen and he's in that position in the box, you know the net is going to bulge because his finishing capabilities are incredible.

"He's put it in the top bin and you always knew he was going to score there.

"The boys were calling it a [Aiden] McGeady spin, but it's the Gallagher spin now because it was brilliant.

"That was four games without a win we were on so to bounce back with a 6-1 scoreline is brilliant.

"That's my first professional career hat-trick, so the ball is going to go up on the mantel piece.

"It's weird. I was talking before the game and people were asking me if I'd scored a hat-trick in my career before. And I was like: 'No, never a professional one.'

"So for it to come after that is brilliant. The team performance was outstanding."

Fellow striker Callum Smith had a glorious view of the goal and was pictured looking stunned after seeing Gallagher's effort find the net.

He added: "Gal's is a brilliant goal. I don't know what he's done. He's done some sort of skill and then put it in the top corner.

"I've never seen him do anything like that in my life, but what a goal.

"I tell you what, if that's not goal of the season I don't know.

"To be fair, the gaffer scored a good one at Montrose sio there will be a few options for goal of the season."
