Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe determined to get one over on Kelty Hearts

Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe admits there’s a bit of needle attached to Saturday’s League One clash against Kelty Hearts, after the Fifers stunned them back in October.

Former Motherwell youth Alfredo Agyeman netted the only goal of the game with five minutes left in a 1-0 win at Central Park, and that’s a result that still clearly rankles with the Diamonds player-coach.

He’s hoping Airdrie can stretch their unbeaten run to four games against eighth-placed Kelty, but get back to winning ways, after a last-gasp strike by Lewis Jamieson earned them a 1-1 draw against basement battlers Peterhead on Saturday.

McCabe said: “It’s a wee bit bitter-sweet.

“I’m looking forward to the game but there’s a little bit of needle for myself, going there and losing the game in the last minute, or the last couple of minutes or whatever it was, down there.

“I’ll be looking to go and make that right.”

McCabe was clearly furious with his side’s first-half performance, but says they showed a bit of character to have Peterhead on the ropes for most of the second half, before Jamieson popped up with a well-worked leveller two minutes from time.

He said: “You try and take any positives that you can.

“We had two clean sheets on the bounce, the positive to take from this week was the reaction we got in the second half, and a little bit of character in terms of the way they wanted to play.

“We moved the ball really well in the second half, we worked some good opportunities, and it was just that final wee bit, which can come down to a bit of luck.

“In certain games – against Montrose for example – we went and scored four, so some days they fall for you, some days they don’t.

“But I’m much more pleased with the second half than the first 45.”

McCabe, whose side are 10 points off of leaders Dunfermline, added: “It was a battling performance and LJ popped back up with a goal.

“The second half performance probably merited a minimum of a draw.

“I thought in the second half we were in total control.

“We should have done enough to win the game, but in terms of how the game went and what I asked for reaction wise, in the second half I was much more pleased.”
