Callum Fordyce admits Airdrie had to scrap out their 1-0 win over Clyde on Saturday, but they’re already looking to build on that when Peterhead visit this weekend.
The Diamonds captain, who is also assistant manager, watched as Lewis Jamieson clipped in the rebound after Neil Parry had saved his 78th-minute penalty to down the Bully Wee and bag back-to-back league wins for the second time this season.
That sets them up for a clash against League One’s basement side Peterhead at New Broomfield, and defender Fordyce says it was a professional performance.
He said: “Clyde are obviously on a bad run of form so it was always going to be scrappy, it was never going to be pretty.
“You never get two games the same. The first time we played them the score-line was a wide margin in our favour [5-0 win in September].
“The pitch isn’t great, you saw that in the first half, the ball was bouncing all over the place, it was just one of those games where you roll the sleeves up, and a win is a win, it’s as simple as that.”
Airdrie’s win consigned second-bottom Clyde to an 11th straight league defeat.
Prior to their 4-0 win at home to Montrose in their previous fixture, the Diamonds had gone six without a win, so Fordyce has some sympathy.
“It’s tough when you’re going through that spell,” he said, “but on our part the boys went in their professionally, put on a performance that got us a win, and that’s all that matters.
“This league is tough, we’ve come under a lot of criticism recently, we’ve taken it on the chin, and everybody knows in there how good a side we are.
“We’ve shown that. We played some great football last week, this week we’ve maybe not played that great, but we’ve got that side to our game where we can go and dig out results.
“It’s a good building block, it’s that momentum.,
“This is one of the toughest leagues in Scotland, if not the toughest, everybody can beat everybody and there’s not really a bad team, so every game is different.”
A win against Peterhead could potentially move Airdrie back to third, should results go their way, and Fordyce said: “Peterhead are a good side, they try to play a brand of football, try to press the front, high intensity, so it’s going to be an exciting game, especially down at our place.
“We’ve got a good home record, we enjoy playing at home on the new pitch, and the boys are full of confidence.
“Next week it’s another game, we’ll try to dictate the play as usual.”
