Airbnb guest outraged by host's strict list of rules - including ban on cooking

If you've ever stayed in an Airbnb property, then you'll know they can often be fantastic alternatives to staying in a hotel, as many of them give you the opportunity to treat the property as a home away from home.

But one person who recently stayed in an Airbnb was left outraged when they arrived to find a list of rules that had been left for them by their host, which told them what they could and couldn't do while staying at the property.

And while you might think that one of the main benefits of an Airbnb is being able to cook your own meals instead of having to spend money eating at restaurants, this guest wasn't able to do that - as they claim their host put a ban on using the kitchen.

The guest shared a picture of the rules listed on the Mildly Infuriating forum on Reddit, where they explained that while the property was reasonably priced at £25-£30 a night, the rules made the house feel more like a hotel, with no access to any amenities except for the bed.

Among the most ridiculous rules, the host said there was to be "no cooking or washing machine use" for any guests staying less than four nights, and for guests that do stay for longer, they can only use the washing machine "once every four days".

In another rule, the cooking ban was even extended to a ban on the entire kitchen, with the host writing: "No use of washing machine or kitchen for guests staying less than four days."

There was also a ban on any visitors, and the WiFi in the property was described as being "only adequate for video calls or light internet use", with another rule banning any guests from "working or studying from home".

And what's more, the host claimed they would only supply toilet rolls "on the first day", meaning anyone staying for a long period of time would need to "do their own cleaning and buy rolls and consumables".

However, there were also a few standard rules on the list, such as banning smoking inside the property, and requesting that the bedrooms and bathroom be left clean prior to departure.

Commenters on the post were quick to share the guest's outrage, as many of them said that if the property had been advertised as having a kitchen and full WiFi access, then the guest could complain to Airbnb.

One person explained: "I sublet the second room in my apartment, so I'm pretty familiar with the host rules. They cannot list the room as having washing machine access, kitchen access, wifi access, etc if they're not allowing free use of those amenities.

"The rule book cited to me the example of 'washing machine can only be used on weekends' or 'wifi can only be used 5pm-10pm' as an example of host rule-breaking, and this host is trying to make a rule that certain guests can't use certain household amenities at all."

While another said: "You need to put this picture up on the site as a review. If I saw this, I would instantly pass it up and look elsewhere."

And a third wrote: "I don't think they can add 'additional rules' that weren't already listed on the website. By paying in the website, you have agreed to those rules. Not surprise rules when you show up."
