Air India staff held for aiding gold smugglers at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Yet another staff at Chennai airport was secured for aiding smuggling of gold and 988 grams worth Rs 43.41 lakh was seized from him. The accused was a customer service agent working for Air India Airport Services Ltd (AIASL), said customs officials.

The staff was intercepted near the duty-free shops at the arrival hall of the international terminal on Friday based on information and a search led to the seizure of four bundles of golden rubbery spread. On extraction, the paste yielded 988 grams of gold with 24 karat purity. The seizure was valued at Rs 43.41 lakh.

Inquiries revealed that the staff was handed over the bundles by a Sri Lankan passenger in the transit lounge. The passenger arrived from Dubai with a connecting flight to Colombo from Chennai.

Ever since M Mathew Jolly took over as the principal commissioner of Chennai air customs, workers of various agencies operating in Chennai airport have been secured for aiding smuggling of gold.
