Air India crash victim’s remains wrongly sent to UK under different name

  • The remains of Vasuben Narendrasinh Raj, 70, a victim of the 2025 Air India crash, were mistakenly identified and repatriated to the UK under another victim’s name, an inquest has heard.
  • Her identity was only correctly established after Westminster Public Mortuary sent the remains for DNA testing, and sent the results to the Indian authorities, who then confirmed they were Ms Raj’s.
  • The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed on 12 June 2025 in Gujarat, India, resulting in 241 passenger fatalities and 19 deaths on the ground.
  • Inquests have been opened for Ms Raj and a second unidentified male victim, whose remains had been mixed with those of another crash victim.
  • Senior coroner professor, Fiona Wilcox, said efforts are ongoing with Indian authorities to identify the male victim, with full inquests to be held once results from the investigation are available.
