Air ambulance called to A19 crash which caused major delays for commuters at Sunderland

Three people were taken to hospital with injuries after a serious crash closed the A19 during rush hour near Sunderland.

Emergency crews attended the scene on the A19 following reports of a collision on the the A19/A183 junction from approximately 5pm yesterday (December 29). Three people were found to have been injured in the crash and were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Six ambulance vehicles were dispatched to the scene by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) with officers from Northumbria Police also present at the scene to assist with traffic management.

The Great North Air Ambulance was also called to the scene.

The closure of the A19 led to major delays on the route between the A1231 Sunderland Highway and A690 Durham Road (Herrington Interchange), with traffic moving at around 5mph. A diversion was set up via the A183.

The closure was lifted by personnel from the force just after 7pm. The closure and diversion had been in place for approximately two hours.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 5pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report of a collision on the A19.

“Three people were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening. A road closure was temporarily put in place before re-opening fully after 7pm.”

A NEAS spokesperson added: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A19/A183 junction shortly after 5pm this evening.

"We dispatched six resources and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance, and three patients have been transported by road to Sunderland Royal Hospital."
