AI songs banned from Australian charts after viral Madonna track

  • The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has banned wholly AI-generated tracks from Australia's official music charts.
  • Under the new rules, songs must be substantially human-made to qualify, although tracks using AI in a supporting role remain eligible.
  • ARIA retains the power to retrospectively remove ineligible songs from its charts and revoke No 1 awards if necessary.
  • The decision puts Brisbane DJ Josh Fawaz's cover of Madonna's Like a Prayer at risk of removal after AI was revealed to have generated its lead vocals and drums.
  • The rule change aligns with global principles set by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry to protect human artistry.
