A specific question is emerging amid the rise of artificial intelligence, are AI recruitment tools posing a unique threat to women returning to employment? Experienced female professionals across the UK fear automated hiring tools may be pushing them out of the workforce. The BBC recently spoke to more than 60 women aged between 40 and 65 across several industries who said they had struggled to find work. Many fear algorithmic screening reinforces gendered ageism.

To recall, this anxiety comes as employers increasingly adopt artificial intelligence to help manage large volumes of applications. Because companies rarely disclose their recruitment processes, it is often impossible to determine whether AI influenced a particular rejection. However, there are widespread concerns that some systems could disadvantage mid-life women attempting to re-enter the corporate sector.
