Afternoon Update: Spain claim World Cup glory; Derryn Hinch farewelled; and how John Carpenter learned to shock

Good afternoon.

Spain defeated defending champions Argentina with a bruising 1-0 victory in extra time to hoist the Fifa World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Argentina and star player Lionel Messi showed flashes of promise, attempting to hold their ground with10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off.

But Spain’s defence proved unassailable as substitute Ferran Torres scored in extra time to propel his team to victory.

The final’s controversial half-time show gave viewers an eclectic mix of ballads, football legends and the Muppets.

After the game, the US president, Donald Trump, and Fifa president, Gianni Infantino were booed before the US leader attempted to gatecrash Spain’s victory party.

Vila Cururu, an illegal gold-mining settlement at the heart of Brazil’s most desecrated Indigenous territory, was a hive of depravity until just a few weeks ago.
