After stepping down from Scream 7, Happy Death Day director sets horror return with supernatural pic that may or may not be set on an airplane

Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman in Happy Death Day.

Christopher Landon is set to make his directorial return to horror with Final Boarding, based on the short story of the same name.

There isn't much information out there about Final Boarding, though we do know that Landon is writing and directing it for Sony's Screen Gems (H/T Deadline). It was reported last year that Screen Gems President Ashley Brucks had optioned the story from Clarence Hammond, a former colleague from her tenure at production banner Paramount Players.

The film was initially announced with a different writer/director, Javier Gullón, at the helm. Landon will work from the short story and the previously written script. We can only assume from the title that it'll either be set in an airport or on an airplane, which immediately gives us Final Destination vibes...

Landon is perhaps best known for helming Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U, the college-set, Jessica Rothe-starring Groundhog Day-esque slasher pics that were unexpected box office hits. The success of the Happy Death Day franchise led the filmmaker to be offered Scream 7, though Landon ultimately dropped out of directing the seventh installment due to backlash from Melissa Barrera's firing.

In 2025, he directed Drop, a mystery thriller that starred White Lotus actor Meghann Fahy as a widow who receives threatening messages via AirDrop while on her first date in years.

Final Boarding does not yet have a release date. For more, check out our list of all the upcoming horror movies heading your way in 2026 and beyond, or check out our list of movie release dates.
