After solar pact, AAP slams previous govts in Punjab over costly power

CHANDIGARH: After signing a 1,200 MW solar power agreement, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has slammed the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP and accused them of deliberately buying expensive electricity from 2007-2017.

During a press meet, Aam Aadmi Party Punjab chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang questioned the Shiromani Akali Dal for the reason behind the electricity procurement rates of Rs 7.5 and Rs 8 per unit back in 2008, especially considering that the Bhagwant Mann government in 2023 has managed to secure electricity at a significantly lower cost of Rs 2.50 per unit.

Kang accused the Badal government of deliberately entering into expensive power agreements to benefit itself and private companies. Kang also accused the previous Congress government of purchasing electricity at an expensive rate and said that even during the Congress government, electricity was purchased at a higher rate and they gave benefits to many private companies and politicians at the expense of the people's money.

Kang said that in the power agreement signed during the SAD-BJP and Congress government, it was provided that the Punjab government would give a fixed amount to the power companies, whether the government buys the power or not, whether the power is consumed or not, but the government had to pay this money. On the other hand, in the Bhagwant Mann Government, a provision has been made that tenders asking for more than Rs 2.8 per unit would not be accepted.
