After landing a low Rotten Tomatoes score, The Bride bombs at the box office with $13.6 million opening against a $90 million budget

Jessie Buckley as Ida/Penny in The Bride.

Just four days into its run and The Bride looks to be shaping up to be one of 2026's biggest box-office bombs, earning just $13.6 million globally during its opening weekend. After receiving mixed reviews from critics, which resulted in a 60% Rotten Tomatoes score (which has since slipped to 59%), Maggie Gyllenhaal's zany monster movie struggled to pull in audiences against the likes of Scream 7, Wuthering Heights, and Hoppers. It doesn't seem to have helped that The Bride is sharing screens – IMAX ones, specifically – with the new Disney Pixar movie, which released on the same day and has since earned a whopping $88 million. The sci-fi horror made $7.3 million domestically, and $6.3 million in international territories. Given that it reportedly cost around $90 million to produce, and an additional $65 million to market (per Variety), it's a pretty disastrous start for the Warner Bros. flick.Starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley, The Bride sees late English author Mary Shelley (Buckley) share her sequel to her 1818 classic Frankenstein, as Bale's Creature seeks out a "mad scientist" to make him a companion in '30s Chicago. Sparks fly after... well, the sparks fly, though, and lonely monster Frank (Bale) finds himself on a wild, violent road trip as he and his new potty-mouthed paramour outrun the police and petrified locals on their way to Niagara Falls. Jake Gyllenhaal, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Penélope Cruz round out the star-studded supporting cast. The Bride is in cinemas now.
