CHANDIGARH: Poll hustle and bustle was back at Chandigarh Golf Club after three years.
Former Punjab sports minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala and former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh's brother Malvinder Singh were among 1,150 of 1,800 voters to exercise their franchise in the elections to the new executive board held here on Sunday.
For the first time, the elections witnessed a triangular contest for the president's post - Lt Col HS Chahal (Bobby), S P S Ghai (Nippy) and Major Rajinder Singh Virk (Lalli). The remaining office-bearers will be nominated by the president-elect. The voting started at 11.30 am. Brigadier J S Phoolka (retd) was the returning officer. The counting of votes will be held on Monday.
The last elections to be contested took place in 2018. In 2019, only one candidate had filed nomination for president and 11 members for the executive committee, leading the elections to be held unanimously.
In 2020, due to the Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions, no annual general meeting (AGM) or election could be held and were deferred to 2021, when the president and the committee were elected unanimously. This year too, the elections were postponed from the originally scheduled January 30 due to the rise in Covid cases and strict curbs.
The members of the club include several high-profile Punjab and Haryana politicians, military officers and bureaucrats. A P S Johal, general manager, Chandigarh Golf Club, said the voting took place till 4.30 pm, with more than 1,150 members casting their votes. Each member voted to elect 11 executive members in addition to the president.
