After 3 years, Diablo 4's secret cow level is finally uncovered following Lord of Hatred, immediately labelled "boring" compared to Diablo 2 and 3's versions: "Needs more cows"

After years of searching, Diablo 4's secret cow level has been uncovered. The mythological area was discovered through layers of bovine-themed jumping through hoops, right on the heels of the Lord of Hatred expansion's release.

If you're at all familiar with the Diablo games, you probably know about the secret cow level in Diablo 2, a hidden dungeon that requires players to follow some specific instructions in order to access it. Inside are a bunch of demonic bovidae who provide quite nice loot, as an extra reward beyond simply getting there.

The whole thing is a longstanding meme that carried into Diablo 3, and now the fourth installment. Since release, people have been piecing together in-game esoterica involving cows, including, but not limited to, going to a cow island and fishing cows out of the ocean. I wish I was kidding.

Finally, the portal's been unlocked, and it corresponds with Lord of Hatred's release. To keep things brief, on the day the expansion became available, a clue became visible that drops a hint about seeing something with your own eyes. Then, after going back to the cow island (where else?), you'll find a number of cattle in a circle.

Killing them all opens the hallowed gates to the realm of pure moo-jesty. Through there, you'll find similarly buff, bovine enemies to the previous two iterations, and if you bash your way around enough, you'll eventually find the Cow King, who drops his crown when you defeat him. A video from LoathBurger above goes through everything in finer detail.

This thing has different effects depending on the day you're wearing it, for added absurdism. Sadly, after all this digital archaeology, some players are a tad disappointed. "Both D2 and D3 cow levels were great for loot, and also had some whimsy in their sound effects/lvl ost. Compared to that, this cow level seems a bit... boring," one player states on Reddit.

"Cows don't even say moo, I'm uninstalling," another fan jests. "Eeeh looks like it needs more cows?" someone muses. "Given the amount of effort this took to reach (seriously, kudos) I did expect something a little more... idk, wacky?" a fourth Redditor adds.

Maybe the real treasure is the cows we passed along the way, hm? Perhaps Diablo 5's secret cow level will be more roundly satisfying.

Blizzard swiftly removes new Diablo 4 quality-of-life feature after players complain it was costing them valuable loot: "It missed the mark."
