African Plume weather and exact date UK will hit 25C as Leeds temperatures soar

Weather forecasters have estimated the date the UK will start to see 25C heat as an African heat plume brings us into summer.

It is blessedly warm and sunny in Leeds this weekend, but a lot of spring has been decidedly less clear. There's been a lot of clouds and some rain too - making it a particularly dull spring so far.

The Met Office said England and Wales experienced their wettest March since 1981, and Northern Ireland its third wettest March ever recorded. In Devon, Somerset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, the Met office said the dullest March was seen in 110 years, the Express reports.

But this weekend in Leeds we're seeing temperatures of 19C and 20C, with mostly clear skies. And forecasters are predicting that's going to continue (for the most part).

Senior meteorologist at British Weather Services Jim Dales has said the UK could start to see high temperatures of 25C by the end of May. He added that a plume of North African air will push across Europe in early June, increasing both humidity and temperatures.

Jim told the Express: "We should hit 25C first before May is out. Then 30C is the next staging post. I think it’s a 50/50 chance for 30C heat during the first 10 days of June, but it is all down to us receiving the necessary sustained airflow from North Africa.

"High pressure will need to come over the UK, easing away to the east as an Atlantic front closes in."

Weather maps identify Saturday, June 3, as a point where the mercury could really start to heat up across Britain. The Express reports weather maps start to reach the red mark of high temperatures in parts of the UK on this date - particularly in the south.

The Met Office has predicted in its long range forecast that temperatures will be slightly above average in the coming weeks. Over the next five days, Yorkshire is looking at "bright or sunny spells with light winds. Warm at first".
