A number of African leaders have expressed their desire to strengthen their relationships with the United States after congratulating President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory Wednesday.
Nigeria’s President extended his “heartfelt congratulations,” expressing trust that President Trump will bring the world closer to peace and prosperity.
Zimbabwe’s President also congratulated Trump, emphasizing the need for leaders who speak for the people and expressing readiness to work with the American people to build a better, more prosperous, and more peaceful world.
Liberia’s President called Trump’s election a “dawn of a new beginning for the American people” and an opportunity for renewed hope.
The President of South Africa expressed his anticipation of continuing the close and mutually beneficial partnership between the two nations across all domains of cooperation.
In 2018, Trump faced criticism for reportedly making derogatory remarks about certain countries, including those in Africa. Despite this, data from the Pew Research Center in 2020 indicated that a significant percentage of Kenyans, Nigerians, and South Africans believed that Trump would make the right decisions regarding world affairs.
