An African elephant who lived in isolation for over two decades in a zoo in India died of a rare rodent-borne virus, an autopsy report revealed.
Shankar, the 29-year-old elephant, is said to have died in September from the encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) that can infect a wide range of animals, causing sudden death due to heart and brain inflammation, officials said.
