Adelaide powers past St Kilda to win AFLW minor premiership
Chelsea Randall has made a successful return from injury as Adelaide secured the AFLW minor premiership with a 39-point win over lowly St Kilda.
Star pair Ebony Marinoff and Erin Phillips shone as the Crows took control after quarter-time on Sunday, kicking away to post a 7.11 (53) to 2.2 (14) victory at RSEA Park.
The result gave Adelaide a 9-1 record for the season, with a superior percentage lifting them above Melbourne at the top of the ladder.
Adelaide are the only team in the women's competition with multiple premierships and are aiming for a third flag this season.
They will start the finals series as favourites to atone for last year's near miss, when they were beaten by Brisbane in the grand final.
Saturday's win was a comfortable tune-up, with Marinoff (25 disposals) and Phillips (19) finding plenty of the ball against the lowly Saints.
Ashleigh Woodland booted two majors as the game's only multiple goal-kicker.
Woodland's 2.3 made her the competition's leading goal-kicker for the home-and-away season with 19, one clear of both Melbourne star Tayla Harris and GWS forward Cora Staunton.
Crows captain Randall had been sidelined by a right hamstring injury since round four and got through her comeback match in a positive sign ahead of the finals.
She finished with 10 disposals, while first-round draft pick Zoe Prowse enjoyed a win on her debut.
But there is concern over experienced forward Justine Mules, who hurt her left arm in a marking contest late in the match.
Fremantle thump Gold Coast by 37 points
Fremantle have fallen short of snaring a home final despite keeping their opponents goalless in a 37-point AFLW win over Gold Coast at Fremantle Oval.
The Dockers entered Sunday's match needing a huge win to overtake North Melbourne in fourth spot, but they were two goals short of what was required in the 7.4 (46) to 0.9 (9) victory.
The result saw the Dockers finish in fifth spot, thrusting them into an away qualifying final against the fourth-placed Kangaroos.
Gold Coast finished the season in 10th spot with three wins and a draw in a much-improved display from last year's winless wooden spoon campaign.
Fremantle's principal aim for the match was snaring the win, but making up the 16.5 percentage points to leapfrog North Melbourne would have also been front and centre.
They appeared no hope after scoring just three goals in the first half, but a four-goal burst in the final term sparked life into the equation.
The Dockers needed two more goals in the final 68 seconds of the match, but their hopes were ended when Roxy Roux was tackled while going for goal 20 metres out with just 43 seconds remaining on the clock.
In reality, it was Fremantle's 88-point loss to Melbourne a week earlier that cost them a home final.
In the end, Fremantle fell 4.1 percentage points short.
Star Fremantle midfielder Kiara Bowers marked her return from a knee injury with 18 disposals and 17 tackles, while Angelique Stannett was a rock in defence with 21 disposals.
Suns midfielder Alison Drennan tallied a game-high 25 disposals, while Kalinda Howarth (19 disposals) provided excellent run.
Brisbane fight past Bulldogs in Ballarat
Brisbane have been given an early taste of what to expect in the AFLW finals before showing their class in a 32-point win over the Western Bulldogs.
As coach Craig Starcevich celebrated his 50th game in charge, the Lions shook off a stern first-half challenge to post a 10.6 (66) to 5.4 (34) victory in Ballarat on Sunday.
Star midfielder Emily Bates had 18 disposals and 11 tackles with Alexandra Anderson (15 and five) also influential in the result.
Orla O'Dwyer, Sophie Conway and Greta Bodey kicked two goals apiece for the winners.
The Lions will next host Collingwood or possibly Fremantle — if the Dockers lose to Gold Coast on Sunday — in a qualifying final.
And they will enter the finals in strong form as they seek to become the first team to win back-to-back premierships in the women's competition.
While there was little riding on Sunday's contest in terms of the ladder — the Bulldogs were knocked out of finals contention 24 hours earlier — it was played at a high intensity.
Brisbane kicked five goals to four in a hot first half and led by just six points at the main break.
The floodgates opened for a period of the third term as the Lions piled on three quick majors to break the game open.
The Bulldogs lost Kirsty Lamb to a shoulder injury for most of the third quarter but she returned to play out the match.
Dogs captain Ellie Blackburn (25 disposals) was busy as always and Richelle Cranston kicked two goals.
