Fremantle hold on against Port Adelaide as Mitch Georgiades, Hayden Young take to the skies

Rory Lobb booted a career-high five goals as Fremantle outlasted Port Adelaide by eight points in a Perth Stadium thriller to consolidate their spot in the AFL's top-four.

In a contest stacked with highlights, the Dockers had led by 40 points on Sunday before Port stormed their way back with five goals either side of three-quarter time to reduce the margin to single digits.

But in the dying minutes, the Power's Robbie Gray and Todd Marshall each failed to convert straightforward set shots and the Dockers held on to run out 15.9 (99) to 14.7 (91) winners.

The win puts Fremantle a game clear in fourth position and one win shy of ladder-leaders Melbourne.

But it may come at a cost with injury-prone key forward Matt Taberner (two goals) substituted out with a hamstring concern in the final term.

Taberner has managed just eight games this season after being sidelined with hamstring and back issues.

A crowd of 41,326 enjoyed no shortage of highlights before the blockbuster finish.

Fremantle rising star Hayden Young had the Dockers faithful on their feet when he sat on the head of a hapless Lachie Jones and pulled down a remarkable grab in the second quarter.

Caleb Serong delivered some more magic minutes later, slotting a running goal from the tightest of angles on the boundary line to put the hosts up by 25 points at half-time.

Power young gun Mitch Georgiades delivered his own mark-of-the-year contender late in the third term when he soared above the 195cm Brennan Cox.

But it was Fremantle's Brownlow Medal hopeful Andrew Brayshaw who delivered arguably the key moment, his sensational rundown tackle on Jeremy Finlayson setting up a Lachie Shultz goal which curbed Port's late-game run.

Brayshaw led a Fremantle midfield which responded strongly after being soundly beaten in last week's 31-point loss to Carlton.

With dual Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe playing almost exclusively in a half-forward role, Brayshaw combined with Caleb Serong, Will Brodie and ruckman Sean Darcy to ensure Fremantle dominated the clearances.

Outside runners James Aish and Jordan Clark were also important while 207cm spearhead Lobb feasted on Fremantle's forward forays.

Lobb, off contract next year and linked to a possible move to the east coast after a failed trade bid last season, slotted three of his five goals in the opening 10 minutes of the third quarter.

Ollie Wines (39 disposals) and Travis Boak (32) led Port's midfield resurgence while Charlie Dixon kicked back-to-back majors in the final term after being previously held goalless.

The Power, who host GWS next week, sit in 12th position with their final hopes dwindling.

Giants win wrestle in the rain against Hawks

GWS have poured more misery on Hawthorn with a 22-point AFL victory in wet and wild conditions at Giants Stadium.

The Giants wore down the Hawks in a tough contest to hand the visitors their fifth consecutive loss with a 11.6 (72) to 7.8 (50) triumph on Sunday.

On a day when goals were hard to come by, the Giants' late inclusion of Callum Brown proved crucial as he booted four majors while playing his first minutes of the season.

Brown was an unused medical substitute last week but was called into the starting 22 on gameday in place of big man Lachlan Keeffe.

And the 21-year-old was superb as his speed worried the Hawks' defence and his deadly goalkicking contradicted the slippery conditions.

Predictions of a shootout between two of the more attacking teams in the competition had to be revised as heavy rain fell across Sydney in the 24 hours before the first bounce.

The stormy weather continued throughout much of the match but the Giants and Hawks delivered an entertaining contest with surprisingly sharp skills and kicking for goal.

It was still a day for the purists with plenty of one-on-one football and both teams looking to gain territory at all costs as each regularly kicked the ball off the ground to simply move it forward.

Giants forward Jesse Hogan was one of few players able to regularly clunk the wet ball and he threatened to break the game open in the first half with six marks and 15 disposals but could only convert that into 1.2 on the scoreboard.

Hogan added another major in the second half but continued to have an impact outside the 50-metre arc while Brown did the damage closer to goal.

Tim Taranto (30 disposals) and co-captains Stephen Coniglio (31) and James Kelly (29) controlled the midfield for the Giants while Lachie Whitfield (33) and Isaac Cumming (30) added what polish was possible on the outside.

The Hawks have now lost nine of their past 10 matches and struggled as the Giants on-ballers slowly took the game away from them for their fifth win of the season.

Tom Mitchell battled hard for a game-high 36 disposals while Jaeger O'Meara, James Sicily and Harry Morrison each gathered 25 touches.

The Hawks lost James Worpel in the first term after Whitfield tackled the midfielder as he kicked the ball and both fell hard on his right shoulder with veteran Liam Shiels brought into the match in his place.

GWS will be on the road next week to face Port Adelaide on Saturday night while Hawthorn are at home to Adelaide on Sunday.

Tigers triumph over Eagles

Richmond have overcome the loss of superstar Dustin Martin to a hamstring injury in an important 35-point AFL win over West Coast.

The Tigers moved back into the top-eight after riding a third-quarter challenge to prevail 20.8 (128) to 13.15 (93) at the MCG on Sunday.

Daniel Rioli (28 disposals), Jayden Short (21) and Marlion Pickett (25) were strong contributors for Richmond, who leapfrogged Sydney and St Kilda into seventh spot on percentage.

Martin looked slick with 17 disposals, eight score involvements, four clearances and 359 metres gained before leaving the field during the third term.

He failed a fitness test on the boundary line and was substituted out with what the club described as "hamstring awareness".

Both sides were a man down when West Coast lost injury-plagued utility Elliot Yeo to a more serious hamstring issue at about the same stage of the match.

The lowly Eagles got a lift out of Nic Naitanui's return from a knee injury, with Tim Kelly (40 disposals, nine clearances) and Luke Shuey (26, 11) busy at the ruck star's feet.

Naitanui was influential at stoppages, finishing with 19 disposals, 26 hit-outs and six clearances as the Eagles won the clearance battle (45-31).

Kelly capped a superb individual display with two goals and Jamie Cripps kicked three.

Richmond had more firepower in attack, sharing the scoring load and making the most of their chances.

Jack Riewoldt (three), Shai Bolton, Shane Edwards, Tom Lynch, Kamdyn McIntosh, Liam Baker and Pickett (two each) all kicked multiple goals.

It was a scrappy opening, plagued with a series of skill errors by foot from both sides.

Martin and Rioli were exceptions as their slick ball use helped Richmond kick the final four goals of the first half to lead by 34 points at the main break.

They increased the advantage to as much as 39 points before the Eagles enjoyed a brief period of dominance after Martin and Yeo went off.

The visitors kicked 6.5 to 4.1 for the third quarter and an upset was on the cards when debutant Zane Trew calmly converted a free kick to cut the margin to 11 points.

But the Tigers steadied through Liam Baker when Naitanui's tangle with Ivan Soldo off the ball resulted in Shannon Hurn's defensive mark being turned into a Richmond free kick close to goal.

Eagles forward Jack Darling out-muscled Josh Gibcus to kick an early goal but was kept fairly quiet in his 250th game.
