Afghanistan Responds to Pakistani Strikes on Kabul and Kandahar, Escalating Regional Tensions

According to Taliban authorities, Afghan forces carried out retaliatory attacks targeting strategic military centers and installations in Pakistan. The response was described as a direct reaction to what Afghan officials called violations by Pakistani forces along the Durand Line, the long-disputed border separating the two countries.

A social media post from a handle identifying itself as Afghanistan’s Ministry of National Defense claimed that Afghan air forces launched a precision strike on Pakistani military positions in the Kohat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The post stated that the operation was conducted in response to “night-time violations” by the Pakistani military.

“In response to the Pakistani military regime's night-time violations of the Durand Line, Afghan air forces targeted strategic military centres and installations of Pakistani troops in the Kohat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this morning,” the statement read.

The post further claimed that the attacks destroyed the Kohat military fortress and struck nearby facilities within a two-kilometre radius, including a command centre responsible for Durand Line operations and the commander’s office.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan had launched strikes inside Afghanistan, reportedly hitting residential areas in Kabul and damaging infrastructure in Kandahar. Among the targets was a fuel depot at Kandahar airport, which was destroyed during the operation.

The exchange of strikes has intensified concerns about a broader conflict between the two countries, both of which have had a long history of disputes over border security and militant activity along the Durand Line.

The situation has also drawn attention from the international community. Discussions about whether global powers should intervene to mediate the conflict have begun to surface, as fears grow that the confrontation could further destabilize the region.

As tensions continue to rise, observers are closely watching whether diplomatic efforts will be initiated to prevent the situation from escalating into a wider regional crisis.
