AFC South news round-up: Texans stripped of pick, Jags’ Ridley expresses remorse

With the start of free agency rapidly approaching, we’re taking a trip around the AFC South to see what the Tennessee Titans’ division rivals, the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans, are up to.

The unofficial start of free agency is Monday, when the legal tampering period begins. Then, on Wednesday, which is the start of the new league years, players can start officially signing contracts.

After free agency comes the draft in late April, where the Texans now have one less pick after violating league rules. Speaking of the draft, the Colts and Texans now have another quarterback-needy team in front of them.

After his reinstatement from a year-long gambling suspension, Jags wideout Calvin Ridley expressed remorse for his actions, and he went into detail about how he battled depression and anxiety during his time in Atlanta.

Check out those stories and more in our latest AFC South news round-up.

Jaguars use franchise tag on TE Evan Engram

Bob Self/Florida Times-Union

The Jags and tight end Evan Engram were unable to strike a deal on a long-term contract extension, forcing Jacksonville to slap the tag on him. The two sides can still work out a deal, though.

This is significant, as Engram’s $11.3 million franchise tag price will count against the cap in full. An extension would’ve enabled the cash-strapped Jags to lower his 2023 cap hit, giving the team more flexibility in free agency.
