Advice for travellers amid 'national security incident' disruption at Glasgow Airport

With a major disruption being reported at Glasgow Airport amid reports of a "national security incident", thousands of passengers could be affected by delays or cancellations.

Travellers have already taken to social media to express their frustration at missed flights as a result long delays in passing through security gates at the airport.

Reports suggest that a tannoy announcement is currently advising travellers that the delays are down to a "national incident" and that the airport is currently "operating at capacity".

The Home Office said they are unable to comment on the situation at this time.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: “Additional temporary security measures have been put in place by UK Border Force. Understand this is UK wide".

Are Glasgow Airport flights still taking off?

Flights are currently still showing as departing and arriving. 

Passengers are advised to check their flight information and arrive at Glasgow Airport in advance of their flight due to he increased time going through security.

Loganair told one passenger: "In light of all airlines being affected by the recent security situation, please allow additional time to retrieve your luggage.”

What if I miss my flight or it is delayed?

One passenger has told Glasgow Times he has missed a flight to Southampton and is still not through security. 

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website says airlines are obliged to support passengers who are affected. This means anyone whose flight has been delayed or cancelled from a UK airport, arriving in the country on an EU or UK airline, or arriving at an EU airport on a UK airline.

Passengers are eligible for support if they are affected by a “significant delay” – more than two hours for a short-haul flight of under 1,500km, more than three hours for medium-haul of up to 3,500km, and more than four hours for long-haul flights.

Airlines must provide a reasonable amount of food and drink (normally in the form of vouchers), refunds for the cost of calls and accommodation for passengers stuck overnight and transport to a hotel or their home. This must be provided until you are able to fly, no matter how long the delay lasts.

Are other airports affected?

At this time, passengers at Manchester, Edinburgh, Gatwick and Heathrow Airports are also all experiencing similar situations.

One on Twitter/X said: "Huge queues at terminal two security right now! Absolute shambles!"

However, Manchester Airport replied saying: "We’re sorry that you experienced a prolonged security queue.

"Our security teams work hard to ensure the safety and security of all at Manchester Airport and carry out important checks set by the UK Government."
