As Bristol and the rest of the UK reach heatwave temperatures this week, National Highways has issued advice for drivers amid the extreme heat. Both temperatures and the dazzle of sunshine can affect motorists and their vehicles.
Temperatures are high in Bristol this week. On Sunday, it is set to reach 31 degrees according to the Met Office.
There are a number of ways drivers can minimise risk to themselves, passengers and their vehicles in hot weather. National Highways has issued a list of guidance that motorists can follow this week.

Whilst driving in bright sunshine, drivers are being advised to ensure a number of things. Wearing sunglasses whilst driving can indeed reduce the glare from sunlight, increasing road visibility.
However, National Highways warns against category four sunglasses, as these have extremely dark lenses and are unsuitable for driving. Every pair of sunglasses is labelled with a category number, and motorists are encouraged to check theirs before driving.
When temperatures are high, motorists are advised to ensure vehicle engines stay within the standard operating temperature range. If an engine begins to overheat, motorists are advised to stop somewhere safe and give the engine time to cool.
National Highways has also issued an important reminder for motorists to keep an eye out for cyclists, motorcyclists, walkers and horse riders. As summer means more will be on the roads, drivers are advised to slow down on sharp bends in case there is a vulnerable road user around the corner.
More guidance has also been issued to keep drivers and passengers safe in the heat. Before leaving for a journey, drivers are advised to check the weather forecast of their destination, the travel conditions that day and to check their vehicle thoroughly.
Mel Clarke, Customer Service Director for Operations at National Highways, said: “It is always important to plan ahead for your journey and this advice is no different during periods of hot weather. Our advice is that everyone should check their vehicles, such as tyres, coolant and oil levels, before heading out.”
To keep informed about driving conditions during journeys, drivers are advised to follow messages on overhead signs and listen to radio updates. Taking a bottle of water along for the journey to ensure you stay hydrated and leaving plenty of time for journeys so there is no rush is also advised.
