Adventure Cinema's outdoor film screenings to return to the North East this summer

Film fans will be able to pack a picnic and chill out under the stars for an al fresco film screening as touring company Adventure Cinema prepares for a summer return to the region.

The outdoor events company is planning two stop-offs in the North East on its tour schedule whose movie programme includes all-time classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Steven Spielberg’s new version of musical hit West Side Story.

The touring festival first will be heading to Sunderland with a trio of screenings taking place in Herrington Country Park.

There, Mamma Mia!, Pulp Fiction and The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be shown at 9.30pm on consecutive nights from May 13-15 on the event field, near the Cafe on the Park.

The following week Adventure Cinema is aiming to bring its big screen event to Saltwell Park in Gateshead where, still subject to licence approval, it will be setting up its big screen near the Bandstand.

On the planned May 20-22 programme at the park is West Side Story for the opening night, May 20, to be followed by Mamma Mia! at the same time on May 21 and The Rocky Horror Picture show on May 22. All films are set to start at at 9.45pm, by which time audiences will have settled down with their picnics.

Tickets cost £14.50 (there are also £9.50 tickets for under-12s for the Mamma Mia! screening at Gateshead).

Audiences are also being encouraged to bring along their own camping seats and rugs, with their picnics, although there are some VIP deckchair options currently available for Rocky Horror night at Gateshead and for Pulp Fiction at Sunderland.

These cost £20.50 and include a luxury deckchair in a prime spot and and a bag of popcorn.
