Measles in 2026 is increasingly an adult illness. People 20 and older account for 38% of the nation's 3,471 confirmed cases this year, or 1,305 patients, up from 29% in 2025, according to CDC data reflecting cases reported as of September 17. Adults also account for 156 of the year's 301 measles hospitalizations, just over half.
The severity data may surprise many families. Adults with measles are being hospitalized at a rate of 12%, about the same as children under 5 (13%) and three times the rate for school-aged children and teens (4%), according to a CIDRAP analysis of the CDC figures. For many households, that shifts the question from whether the children are protected to whether the parents, grandparents, and caregivers are.
