A man set to be King Charles' representative has been told of the "restraint required" in his role amid a backlash over questionable online posts.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn reached out as incoming Northern Territory administrator David Connolly copped more flak over his appointment, prompting an apology ahead of Friday's swearing-in ceremony.
