Adikavi Nannaya University (AKNU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mokka Jagannadha Rao on Tuesday announced that the university would soon set up a ‘School of Distance Education’ to offer higher education in the distance mode in the Godavari region and attempt for self-sustainability.
Speaking to the media here, Prof. Jagannadha Rao said distance education would have a great demand in the Godavari region and a potential to earn roughly ₹10 crore annually. The university had 400 affiliated degree colleges in the region.
“We have submitted our self-study report to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The school of distance education will become functional immediately after the NAAC inspection,” he said. The inspection is likely to be done before June.
Cluster of institutions
The University Grants Commission has allowed to form a cluster of academic institutions for collaborative research and academic exchange apart from better use of the infrastructure facilities in the respective institutions.
“The National Institute of Technology (NIT-Tadepalligudem), Dr.Y.S.R.Horticulture University (Venkataramannagudem), JNTU-Kakinada and AKNU have been formed into cluster group institutions. Two meetings have been conducted to prepare an action plan for exchange in the areas of academics and research among the institutions,” said Prof. Jagannadha Rao.
After an engineering student was found consuming ganja on the campus recently, a special team had been constituted to put a check on any illegal activities on the university premises, he said.
