Newcastle United fans in recent years have got a history of showing a particular set of skills when it comes to scouring the internet and unearthing potential stories about their club - usually starting with fans following airplanes, but last week it was something different as one fan spotted what appeared to be details of a new Adidas store in Newcastle.
One fan found a link that listed St James' Park as an Adidas store. The page on the sport brand's website listed the shop as 'Newcastle Utd Football co LTD' which is what the football club is registered as on Companies House. It also provided an address - which was that of St James' Park, and a phone number.
It sparked excitement among some members of the Toon fanbase with many holding out for Adidas to return at kit manufacturers - a post they held from 1995-2010. The 1995-1996, grandad collar shirt is a jersey that many fans consider to be their favourite given it was the one worn at the height of the Entertainers Era.
This season has seen rumors circulate that Adidas could return and even had representatives in the stands at one game earlier this season. The very fact that Chief Commercial Officer Peter Silverstone and CEO Darren Eales have both worked with the company in the past has only added to the speculation.
However, Chronicle Live understands that the listing of a store at St James' Park on Adidas' website was done in error with a source stating that 'the page was created due to historical or incorrect data uploaded in a batch.'
The listing has now been removed from the Adidas website.
With current kit suppliers Castore tied into a 'multi-year-deal' there is uncertainty to how much it would cost to buy the company out of the deal, and if indeed Newcastle are intending to in the near future.
