Adele makes 'shock return to the studio after five years' as major career move revealed

Adele is reportedly back in the recording studio, five years after the release of her chart-topping album 30, as she prepares for a new chapter in her career.

The singer, 37, has largely stepped away from the spotlight since concluding her Las Vegas residency in November 2024.

However, reports suggest new music may be on the horizon, tied to an unexpected move into film.

Adele is said to be making her acting debut in Cry To Heaven, a forthcoming adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1982 novel, directed by Tom Ford.

The project, set in 18th-century Italy, explores the world of castrati opera singers and aristocratic rivalries, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Nicholas Hoult also set to star.

According to reports, Adele will record an original track for the film.

A source told The Sun: “The movie is steeped in the opera world, so naturally, they wanted the world’s most famous singer involved.

“When she finally agreed to record a track, the producers were ecstatic. Getting new material from Adele is like gold dust. But she is absolutely determined to prove she has the acting chops on camera to match her powerhouse vocals.”

The Standard has contacted Adele’s representative for comment.

Another source suggested the move reflects a broader shift in focus, with Adele said to be considering a future in acting.

“The truth is, an acting career is vastly more conducive to family life than being a touring musician,” the insider said. “Film sets offer a structured routine. You shoot for a few months in one location, you do the press, and then you are done.”

Adele, who shares her son Angelo, 12, with ex-husband Simon Konecki, has previously spoken candidly about her reluctance to tour and her desire to prioritise family life.

Speaking during the final show of her residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, she said: “To my son, I chose to do a residency maybe because I f****** hate touring.

“But I chose to do a residency so I could keep his life normal. And I did do that. But I also wouldn't change it for the world… I get to be with him on the weekends now because obviously he can't always come. So I love you to bits. ... Thank you for being patient for me.”

Reflecting on what comes next, she added: “I just don't know when I want to next come on stage. And it's time to move on. It's time for the next chapter and it's time for the next season of my life.”
