Adele has candidly admitted she felt "lost" during her split from Simon Konecki as she discussed the meaning behind her song lyrics.
The Chasing Pavements star, 34, confirmed in 2019 that she and her charity CEO husband Simon, 48, had split after eight years together and three years of marriage. Adele and Simon also share a son Angelo, nine, together.
Now, in a candid interview about the stories and meanings behind some of her most popular song lyrics, Adele has revealed exactly how she felt as she navigated her way through the breakup.
Adele discussed her lyrics in general as she explains of her lyrics: "They're always still about the same thing, me and seemingly my failed, which is crazy because I actually don't feel like that."
Speaking to Elle UK in a YouTube video, Adele read out the lyrics to her hit song Easy On Me, which she wrote following the breakdown of her marriage.
Reading the lyrics from a piece of paper, Adele recites: "'Go easy on my baby, I was still a child, didn't get the chance to feel the world around me. I had no time to choose, what I chose to do. So go easy on me'."
She then explains of the words from her song Easy On Me from her latest album 30: "It makes me think about how lost I was when I left my marriage.
"I wrote my verse to Easy On Me in the shower then I wrote the chorus later that day.
"A lot of my friends throughout that rainy period of my life kept saying to me, 'you have to go easy on yourself, don't beat yourself up about your decisions' and, you know, 'You've just gotta give it time' and it just really stuck with me that I have to be kind to myself and that it's incredibly layered, what I was going through.
"So, that's where Easy On Me comes from and I love that lyric, 'I had no time to choose what I chose to do', another one in the bag."
Despite Adele struggling through her divorce, she has since moved on with sports agent Rich Paul.
The pair moved in together earlier this year and they have even sparked engagement rumours after the hit singer was snapped with a huge sparkler on her wedding finger in February.
Later in the video chat, Adele revealed she is happier than ever at the moment as she discussed her lyrics from her song Million Years Ago from her 25 album
Reciting the chorus, she says: "'I feel like my life is flashing by and all I can do is watch and cry. I miss the air, I miss my friends, I miss my mother, I miss it when life was a party to be thrown but that was a million years ago."
She recalls being in LA with her son when writing the song and adds: "'A million years ago' is, I feel like we all use that expression, like, 'Oh that was a million years ago,' or 'that was a hundred years ago' and it was very conversational really. And I really did feel like my life was flashing by and all I could do was watch and cry.
"I definitely feel like my life is still flashing by, I'm having the time of my life and the older I get the more and more I love myself and enjoy my life."
However, after sparking engagement rumours Adele recently put the record straight and insisted that, while she is open to marriage, she and Rich, 40, are not yet engaged.
When quizzed by Elle, Adele clarified: "I’m not engaged. I just love high-end jewellery, boy!"
Adele, who shares a nine-year-old son with her ex Simon, is clearly besotted with her beau as she gushed: "I’ve never been in love like this. I’m obsessed with him."
