Adelaide Oval sees record turnout for India vs Australia pink-ball Test match

NEW DELHI: A record crowd of 36,225 spectators filled the stands at Adelaide Oval on the opening day of the second India-Australia Test, setting a new attendance mark for a five-day match between the two teams.

According to Cricket Australia (CA), the previous record was 35,081, set during the 2011-12 series when India was whitewashed 4-0 by Australia.

A sell-out was anticipated at the 53,500-capacity venue as India and Australia renewed their rivalry after a long break between the first and second Tests. This marks India's first pink-ball Test in Australia since their humiliating 36 all-out at the same ground in 2020.

Fans also turned out in record numbers at the Optus Stadium in Perth for the first Test, which India won by 295 runs.

According to CA, the opening two days at Perth Stadium set new attendance records, with 31,302 on Day 1 and 32,368 on Day 2.

The total attendance for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener reached 96,463, making it the second-highest ever recorded in Perth and the highest at Perth Stadium.

Big crowds are also expected in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney for the remaining matches of the five-match series.
