Addiewell prison 'locked down' after staff members allegedly fall ill during 'incident'

Addiewell Prison was reportedly ‘locked down’ on Thursday, after two people have been rushed to hospital following a health-related incident.

A source said that emergency services were called to the West Lothian jail on Thursday after several staff members in the Lomond B wing fell unwell.

Scottish ambulance staff confirmed that two people have since been taken to hospital following the incident.

Prison bosses said they are currently dealing with a health-related incident, however, refused to comment on the claims that staff members had fallen ill.

The source told the Daily Record: “The full prison has been locked down and emergency services are all over it.

“A prisoner started burning some sort of drug and started taking a fit and being sick. Everyone that went to help him also went down too, so staff were lying on the floor. They’re all at the hospital now and the prisoner is there too. He’s in a really bad way.

“The drugs going around the prison at the moment are so dangerous. The place is unsafe. Something needs to be done to get things under control.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 2.59pm to attend an incident at Addiewell Prison. We dispatched a number of resources, including the Special Operations Resource Team, and two patients were transported to St John’s Hospital, Livingston.”

An HMP Addiewell spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire & Rescue Service are supporting prison management to deal with a health related incident.”
