Adam Thomas pleaded 'don't blame me' as he made his first TV appearance since Waterloo Road fans were left devasted by a twist in episode one of the new series. The actor, who has reprised the role of Donte Charles in the BBC's reboot of the show, appeared on Lorraine on Wednesday (January 4).
Waterloo Road fans had been eagerly waiting for the revival to his screens after it was announced back in 2021. The new series marks the school-based drama's first return to screens in almost eight years after it was axed. The show, which ran from 2006 to 2015, was first filmed at Hill Top Primary School in Rochdale before relocating to Scotland.
And the reboot has seen the team return to Greater Manchester and also seen some familiar faces come along for the ride too. While Adam has reprised the role of former bad boy pupil-turned-parent Donte, his on-screen partner Chlo, played by Katie Griffiths has also made a comeback as well as Angela Griffin as the school's new head teacher, Kim Campbell.

But fans were particularly thrilled to see Donte and Chlo back on-screen after watching them as love-struck teenagers all those years ago. The new series, however, shows the pair grown-up, but still as in love as ever, and as parents to Izzie, played by Adam's real-life niece Scarlett Thomas, and their son Tommy, played by Adam's son Teddy.
And everything seemed to be going well until a dramatic turn of events saw Chlo collapse in the kitchen. She had earlier been knocked over by a car after it was shunted during standstill traffic as kids from the school protested. As Donte shouted for his daughter to phone and ambulance, the dad and his kids were soon seen arriving at the hospital.
And in a shocking and tragic ending, Donte was delivered the devastating news that Chlo had died and viewers watched as he and his children sobbed in the corridor of the hospital.
Soon after the episode aired, Adam jumped onto Instagram where he giggled his way through an apology about the shock twist - which didn't go down too well with fans. Filming himself in the bed of his hotel room, the former Emmerdale star said into the camera: "Er..." before laughing.
"I'm sorry guys," he added before bursting out laughing again. Before putting his hand over his mouth, he said: "I'm so sorry. I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh. It's just a nervous laugh. I'm so sorry." As he struggled to hold back his giggles, he eventually said: "No though... How? Why? I mean I knew it was coming but bloody hell."
He has since appeared on ITV's Lorraine to chat to the show's host Lorraine Kelly about the dramatic end to the first episode of the eleventh series. After the show aired a clip, Adam joked: "Did she die? I've only just found out... ah man, fans are outraged, really. They keep messaging me like I can't believe it!
"It started off so well didn't it, then obviously the shock at the end when, unfortunately, Chlo gets... I dunno how much I can give away. Is it out there now? It's not my fault guys, stop blaming me!"
Later, when asked what it was like working with his real-life son Teddy and niece Scarlett, who is the daughter of older brother Ryan and Corrie actress Tina O'Brien, on the show, Adam said: "To go back with them is just the best feeling ever," before he quipped: "At first, I thought it'd be amazing but I remember the first day on set with them and they were literally arguing.
"Teddy was crying and I was thinking "what have I got myself into here.'" But the dad-of-two did add: "But they have been amazing and I hate to say it but they are better than me!"
