Adam Owen on globe-trotting journey to Hibs he hopes leads to more Euro adventures

Adam Owen has racked up enough air miles in his coaching career to circumnavigate the globe.

And probably twice.

So it’s little surprise that, after landing at Hibs this season, the Welshman has designs on more overseas jaunts as he bids to help Lee Johnson get the Easter Road club back flying towards the Euro spots.

Assistant boss Owen has a CV that boasts seven countries, 10 different clubs and the Wales national team since taking up his first position as fitness coach at Celtic in 2003.

That includes a spell as Rangers performance director, assistant roles with the Wales, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Servette in Switzerland, a year as boss at Lechia Gdansk in Poland, assistant at Hebei China Fortune and technical advisor titles at both Seattle Sounders in the MLS and Lech Poznan.

Coaching superstars such as Javier Mascherano and Ezequiel Lavezzi in China as well as uncovering future gems in Switzerland like Denis Zakaria, who has just joined Chelsea on loan from Juventus, were highlights. Not to mention helping take a Gareth Bale-inspired Wales to the semi finals of Euro 2016.

All that in 19 years - and the former defender only turned 42 last week!

It’s been an exhausting journey for the father of two and his family.

But Owen is adamant the experience means Hibs are getting a far better coach than the one that left Scotland and Rangers in 2013.

He said: "Pretty much the last 10 years since I left Rangers has been abroad. I've loved every minute of it - dealing with different cultures, nationalities and picking up different languages.

"It's been a fantastic experience working with different coaches and bringing together a different sort of skill set in a lot of circumstances.

"Putting yourself in an uncomfortable environment isn't for everybody but it's certainly something I've enjoyed.

"I'd certainly encourage players to do something similar.

"I loved my time living in the South of France and working in the Swiss League, a very, very good development league.

"There was a big focus on young players. Denis Zakaria has just moved to Chelsea and we gave him his debut at 17.

"They've all been really good in different ways. MLS was great, managing to do well with a good club over there.

“Working in China and seeing the likes of Javier Mascherano and Ezequiel Lavezzi was fantastic for me, being able to pick their brains.

"I've loved every minute.

“Without a doubt it’s made me a better coach.

“That was one of the biggest things for me, moving to central Europe at that time and being on the border of Germany, France, and Italy, and being able to dip in and out of those types of clubs and work with different managers and coaches and bring it together.

"That linked in very well with Lee; how he wants to go about things is very modern and that's one of the reasons I was keen to come and work with him."

The global experience certainly sounds positive for Owen.

But Hibs fans will be wondering what it means for their club now the new management team of Johnson, Owen and Jamie McAllister have put down roots in Leith.

European spots are the minimum target for the majority of supporters looking for a pick me up after a torrid campaign that saw them finish eighth and two managers sacked.

Owen is well aware of that. He said: "For me you've got six or seven really good clubs capable of challenging for Europe every year in the Scottish Premiership.

"We're trying to make sure at Hibs that we improve on where we were last year - that's the key starting point.

“But how can we progress from there?

"So far, so good; I've been really pleased with how the players have gone about it.

“I think we were down as one of the youngest starting XIs this season which has been a key mantra for where the manager wants to take the club - young, fresh, hungry players who have the chance to develop and evolve with the club over a period of time.

"There are a lot of positives so far and hopefully we can keep that going."
