Adam Montgomery re-joins St Johnstone on loan from Celtic

Adam Montgomery has re-joined St Johnstone for the remainder of the season on loan from Celtic.

The young full-back spent the first half of the season at Callum Davidson's Saints, but his deal ran out at the beginning on January.

Davidson spoke of his hopes of keeping Montgomery for the rest of the campaign and his wishes have now been granted.

The 20-year-old could feature for St Johnstone today as they take on Livingston at McDiarmid Park in the Scottish Premiership.

Ahead of the fixture, Montgomery said: “I’m delighted to sign for a second spell, I have really enjoyed my time here so far.

"When I heard the gaffer wanted to keep me for another 6 months it was an easy answer. The gaffer, staff and the boys have been great since I came in and that made the decision really easy for me.

“The competition for places in the squad drives standards in training every day, I know I will need to continue to work hard if I want to play at St Johnstone.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of the rest of the season and helping Saints finish as high up the table as possible."

Montgomery was initially brought in due to injuries for Saints left backs, Callum Booth and Tony Gallacher.

Both are now approaching full fitness, so Montgomery will face a battle to retain his starting XI position.

Meanwhile,

David Wotherspoon admits St Johnstone need to get back to winning ways quickly after a damp squib of a festive period.

Saints have slipped down the cinch Premiership to eighth place after losing four games on the trot.

They can give their top-six hopes a major shot in the arm though when they host Livingston on Saturday with the chance to move a point behind their visitors.

Wotherspoon said: “It feels like the festive period is over now and we need to get back to business. It has not been a great period for us lately, we have to get back to what we are good at. We are looking forward to this weekend.

“We haven’t looked too far ahead to the next run of games, all our focus is on Livingston this Saturday and to get back to winning ways. That’s what we want to do and give the fans something to cheer about.

“We haven’t started well in recent games, we need to address this issue because when we do get going we are a threat and can cause teams problems.”

Wotherspoon has gone from one of his career highs in playing for Canada at the World Cup to a difficult period that he wants to end quickly.

“The World Cup is done now, it’s back to playing for St Johnstone and that’s my priority,” the former Hibernian player said. “I have to focus on the present and that’s to get back to winning ways this weekend.”
