Adam Armstrong has insisted Southampton are still very much in the cup tie ahead of his return to St James' Park.
The 25-year-old Geordie thought he'd hauled the Saints back into the League Cup semi-final last night only for the goal to be chalked off for a handball after a VAR call from Andre Marriner. The striker is now looking forward to the second leg.
Speaking after the narrow 1-0 win on the South Coast, Armstrong said: "We’ll go to St James’ with something to believe, it’s going to be a great atmosphere next week. It’s a massive game, what footballers live for, semi-finals, big competitions, chance to get into Wembley."

And reflecting on the game, Armstrong said: "We knew we had a few chances in the second half we have to do better with. They score a goal on the break and it’s hard to take when you’re digging in so well and creating chances.
"But we can’t get too down, we’re still in it and it’s going to be a massive game next Tuesday. There’s massive excitement, it’s going to be a huge game. It’s going to be a great atmosphere with both sets of fans."
Southampton face an FA Cup game against Blackpool at the weekend before the semi-final shoot-out against the Saints on Tyneside.
Popular Toon Academy product Armstrong said: "It’s something we’re going to work hard on all week to try and put it right because we’re going to go there and have a right go."
Looking back on his chalked off goal he said: "The lads are gutted, it’s a harsh goal that’s been given against us but it’s one of those things."
