Activision finally ditches previous PlayStation gen for next Call of Duty

Activision has finally confirmed that the next Call of Duty will not launch on PlayStation 4. The news comes from the official Call of Duty X account, shutting down rumors of a PS4 version still in the works.

Their official post says, “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”

Speculation about the series supporting last-gen hardware for at least one more year has been swirling in the community, especially after multiple recent entries still shipped on PS4, including Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. That kept the door open for players who hadn’t yet upgraded to PS5, even as games grew more demanding.

What this move means for PS4 CoD players

If you’re someone who’s still grinding Call of Duty on PS4, this is essentially your final call. The new game will not be playable on Sony’s last-gen console, which means if you want to jump into the next installment, you’ll need to move to PS5 or another supported platform.

It could sting for those who’ve stayed on PS4 because of budget, availability, or simply comfort with their existing setup. Older titles and current live games on PS4 are unlikely to disappear overnight, so players can still stick with what they have for now.

From the devs’ point of view, dropping PS4 support was always going to happen. It was only a question of when, as supporting older hardware often forces studios to make compromises in visuals, scale, and features to ensure the game runs smoothly across every platform. The franchise carried last-gen hardware much longer than many expected, but the next mainline entry will officially leave it behind.

By focusing on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Activision and its partner studios have more room to push graphics, systems, and overall scope without worrying about outdated specs holding anything back. As the next title leaves PS4 behind, ranked ladders, skill-based matchmaking pools, and casual lobbies will concentrate even more heavily on current-gen and PC players.
