Three people have been taken to hospital and others have been told to monitor for symptoms after a dangerous chemical reaction near a major university.
Hazmat crews in full-body protective suits were called to decontaminate the scene after the chemical incident near the University of Sydney's Sports and Aquatic Centre about on Tuesday morning.
They were seen on a footpath near the scene using pincers to delicately lift objects into secure canisters.
A man was taken to hospital after suffering chemical burns to his hands from acid-based chemicals being moved for disposal at the inner-Sydney site, Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement.
Two other people were taken to hospital as a precaution.
The scene was decontaminated and the state's Environment Protection Authority notified of the incident. SafeWork NSW was also informed.
The University of Sydney said a services building was evacuated but there was no further disruption.
"We're grateful there do not seem to have been serious injuries as a result, however ambulance services were on campus and provided appropriate healthcare to the small number we're aware of who required it," a university statement said.
Anyone near the incident has been advised to seek treatment if experiencing symptoms including itchiness to skin or eyes, or respiratory irritation.
