'Accident waiting to happen' as impatient drivers go on tram tracks to avoid Severn Trent works

A busy city road which has closed temporarily for works has resulted in motorists dangerously driving in front of trams to avoid it.

The works by Severn Trent Water are part of their £1.5m planned investment to upgrade the water network across the city.

Works on Noel Street are taking place between February 25 and March 8 however Severn Trent hope to reopen the road early if possible.

Nottinghamshire Live went to the area to speak with local residents about their thoughts on the matter.

Maria Thompson, 21, student, a resident of Noel Street, is understanding about the actual works but said some drivers have been acting poorly.

She said: "Although it's really inconvenient, Severn Trent have been extremely helpful towards residents.

"We got posted notes that we can place in our cars to park for free so at least we have alternative parking.

"I've seen where the road is blocked, multiple cars are driving up the tram tracks up to the bollards to avoid the works instead of going all the way round - it's dangerous and trams have been beeping.

"Ten days is a long time for works to be going on for and it's right outside my window, but hopefully they'll be improvements to our water system."

Zuzanna Zielinksi, 45, mother and resident of Noel Street, also said that the roadworks have promoted dangerous driving on the tram tracks.

She said: "I've lived on this street for nearly seven years now and people accidentally drive on the tram tracks at the Forest tram stop all the time - but with the roadworks people are now choosing to drive on them which is really dangerous.

"I understand the works are necessary but it is quite annoying, they're loud and make it hard to walk on the side of the pavement.

"My main concern is the safety of people waiting at the tram stops and the tram itself as cars drive up the wrong way - it's an accident waiting to happen.

"We got a letter through about the works and it was really helpful, we can put up with it for ten days."

Jeanette Bridgett, 70, retired, has lived on Noel Street for over a decade.

She said: "The works haven't been the biggest issue but it is annoying having to move the car.

"We see people driving on the tram tracks all the time but I think people are doing it purposefully because of the road closure.

"Severn Trent have been really informative so we have no complaints about them."

Severn Trent Water have agreed with NET Tram that Noel Street residents can park in the Park & Ride car park for free during the period.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We’d like to apologise in advance for any disruption that may be caused by our teams carrying out planned improvement works to upgrade the water network on Noel Street in Forest Fields between Friday 25 February and Tuesday 8 March.

"The works are part of a £1.5m project to install almost 6km of new pipes across this part of the city to reduce the number of leaks and bursts. In order to keep our teams and other road users safe during this time Noel Steet will be closed. We understand that this is a busy and well used area and it will be our absolute priority to complete the work as quickly as possible. We’ll be doing everything we can to minimise the disruption and we’d like to thank again the residents in the area for their understanding while we complete this important work.”

A NET spokesman said: “At present, we have not seen any impact on services due to roadworks in Noel Street. However, as with any works close to the tramway, we will continue to monitor the situation. We would also like to remind all motorists to follow highway signage that is in place, and not to encroach on areas that are clearly signposted as being for trams only.”
