In light of next practice “green logistics” and decarbonisation developments in food retailing, co-warehousing space has emerged as an ideal solution for small and medium business enterprises to subsidise their expenditure on logistic facilities to meet green standards. “In 2022, CPALL’s implementation of its ‘7 Go Green’ policy aims to deliver less carbon emissions by infusing operations with green logistic approaches,” said Kampee Metta, Assistant Managing Director Provincial Distribution Centre Operations Office CP All Public Company Limited.
“In response to resumption of business, tourism and economic development, we plan to extend our retail business. Convenience, speed and product quality remain priorities for to fulfil customer needs while proceeding with least harm to the environment is key to business expansion.”
“Warehousing is one of the crucial elements of logistics,” he added. “Hence, food retail worldwide is focusing on warehouse deployment to achieve decarbonisation throughout the logistic landscape.”
As food retail operation at its core relies on speed of delivery, warehouse establishment in areas close to communities is a great advantage. Without loss of freshness and while maximising customer satisfaction, shorter transportation distances entail less carbon emissions per delivery.
However, warehousing management strategy has intricate relations with other logistics functions and technologies. Integration of other eco-sustainable solutions such as circular economy and transhipment are equally significant in resolving climate challenges.
“Besides expansive warehouse establishment, CPALL has replaced small-sized trucks with larger capacity vehicles to deliver larger volumes of products to destinations with fewer trips and less energy consumption while transformation of gas-run trucks to EV system is underway.”
Territory Planner (TP) is another feature encompassing transportation procedures with a mapping guide that indicates the most appropriate routes while also planning deliveries in logical order. As of 2022, total distance from CPALL Mahachai Warehouse has been reduced by over 20% per day.
“In adhering to 2022 CPALL’s greenhouse gas emission commitment of 7,196 tCO2e per year, equivalent to planting 165,508 trees per year, CPALL’s warehouses nationwide are undergoing Green Building, DC Solar Rooftop, LED & Smart LED, and energy-saving automatic washing machine transformations, following the success led by CPALL Mahachai Warehouse, located in Samut Sakorn, which is the pioneering warehouse transformed and certified as a Green Building under LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold Category standard .”
Green Building design is focused on green open space with reserved parking lots for bicycles and car-pooling installed with high heat-protective roofs and walls. Water efficiency standards, including selection of water-saving sanitary ware, reduce water consumption by 40%. Other functionality requirements include highly efficient VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) air conditioning installed in all buildings while innovative electric tubes (T5) save over 20% energy.
Indoor environment quality must allow ample daylight in working spaces and fresh air ventilation. Efficient waste management and disposal is taken into account alongside disposition of recycled content and regional materials.
With recent investment in “Green Logistics Transformation”, solar rooftop panels have already been installed on 19 warehouses, reducing emissions of 3,340 tCO2e per year which is equivalent to the impact of 77,669 trees in a year, thereby reducing electricity consumption by 234,725 kWh.
Green Building Design of warehouses in five locales has reduced yearly greenhouse gas emissions by 109 tCO2e, equivalent to 2,507 trees, reducing electricity consumption by 7,197,830 kWh.
Aside solar rooftop, 20 CPALL warehouses have also been fully fitted with LED & Smart LED electricity features exhibiting energy saving with auto-detection, together reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2,972 tCO2e equivalent to 68,356 trees and reducing electricity consumption by 6,392,000 kWh.
