Abuse inquiry boss criticised for praising school at heart of abuse scandal

The judge chairing the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry has been criticised by a survivor for making “positive” remarks about a school where abuse was rife.

Giles Moffat, now 50, was abused at a top private school.

He has written to Lady Smith about her report on Loretto boarding school, in Musselburgh, East Lothian.

She stated “pupils were exposed to sexual, physical, and emotional abuse both in the senior and junior school” but started her report by saying “many had positive experiences at Loretto”.

In his letter, Moffat wrote her “upbeat approach” was “profoundly insensitive”.

An SCAI spokesman said: “Lady Smith has a duty to be fair, which means positive evidence cannot be ignored.
