ABERDEEN City Council issued more low emission zone fines than any other Scottish city’s first full month of the scheme – with more than double Glasgow's total.
According to figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request submitted by the Press and Journal, more than 6000 fines have been handed out to drivers caught by Aberdeen’s new LEZ’s.
The scheme went live in the Granite City on June 1 as the local authority became the fourth Scottish city to implement the scheme joining Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee.
LEZ’s are designed to improve air quality by reducing the number of high-polluting vehicles which drive through the designated area.
The areas designated as LEZ’s have typically been high-traffic areas, usually at the heart of the city.
Any motorists caught not in compliance with the new LEZ rules in Aberdeen will be issued a £60 fine which will be reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days.
Aberdeen City Council previously estimated only 14% of drivers would be impacted by the clean air scheme but have issued more fines in the first full month than any other local authority.
The council issued 6057 fines in the first month which could have generated £363,420 if none of the fines were paid within 14 days or £181,710 if they all were.
Money generated by the zones is ring-fenced to either maintain the LEZ or fund other clean air initiatives across the city.
Edinburgh issued the second-highest number of fines in the first full month of the scheme which started at the same time on June 1 with 6030.
Dundee, which implemented LEZ’s on May 30, issued the third-highest number of fines at 2966 while Glasgow handed out the fourth-highest number with 2897 and was the first Scottish city to implement the scheme.
