Aberdeen hero, 48, claims Scottish Amateur Cup silverware with East Kilbride YM

Aberdeen hero Robbie Winters helped East Kilbride YM over-35s lift the Scottish Amateur Cup on Friday at the age of 48.

And he joked he now has his sights set on Walking Football.

The Dons favourite is pushing 50 and had to shake off some back problems to play, but he still knows his way to goal.

He scored a spot-kick as YM defeated Edinburgh outfit Fairmilehead 4-2 on penalties at New Douglas Park, after his side had come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 on the night thanks to a Kieran Downs double.

Robbie was also able to enjoy the moment with his 40-year-old brother David, the former Dundee United and Hamilton Accies striker, who started the match.

The East Kilbride-based siblings have been part of the side for years but it was the first time in the club's history that they have won the trophy.

A delighted Robbie, who also played for Dundee United, Norwegian side SK Brann and East Kilbride FC, said: "It's always good to score a goal, no matter where it is. To help the boys win the game was great.

"At 2-0 down we looked out of ot, but we managed to claw our way back.

"I think if the game had gone to extra-time instead of straight to penalties, I think we would probably have been the favourites to win it anyway.

"Thank God it never went to extra-time, though, because my old legs would have gone!

"It's not bad going to win a trophy at my age. I've only played a handful of games for the 35s over the last couple of months because I've got a sore back and stuff like that at the moment.

"I think it's just old age, a bit of wear and tear, but it's good to play 45 minutes on Friday and be involved in the win.

"It's a good bunch of boys there and a good atmosphere at the YM as well.

"We went back to the Village Inn for a couple of beers afterwards to celebrate. I think a couple of the boys went on after that but I went up the road!

"These games keep you going and it's something to look forward to every week.

"But I think my next game will be Walking Football!"

This season Robbie and David - who is assistant manager at Lowland League side Caledonian Braves - have been rolling back the years and helped YM come through seven matches in the competition to get their hands on silverware.

He added: "I enjoy it, he enjoys it and we still link up well.

"Some of the boys are a bit taken aback with the way we play at times. It's just stuff off the cuff between us and we pull off some ridiculous passes sometimes because we just seem to know where the other one is going to be.

"We played with each other at Livingston and then at Pollok as well.

"I think David has scored 39 goals for the over-35s this season so that is some going for him!"

In the shootout, Robbie, Downs, and ex-EK Thistle duo Joe McIntosh and Alan McFadden all netted after Ricky Waddell had missed their first-spot kick.

And Robbie was thrilled for his gaffer Andy Dykes.

He said: "It's very good for the boys and especially the manager Andy Dykes.

"He does a lot for the over-35s here, preparing games and working on the committee, so it's great for him after all his hard work over the years.

"He was mega-chuffed on Friday."

EKYM were also proud to display local charity 'Loaves and Fishes' on their tops to highlight the food bank drive they are doing in the town in the run up to Christmas.
