A section of the Aberdeen support have urged the club to stop signing Celtic players before their thumping win over Stirling Albion in the Premier Sports Cup.
Jim Goodwin's side secured Liam Scales on a season-long loan from the Premiership champions over the summer to make the Irishman the latest Celtic star to head to the Granite City on a temporary basis. The Dons faithful are hoping for a much improved season under their boss and have raised concerns previously over fears they are developing talent for a league rival. But Scales is proving a key contributor with his stunning pass setting up the Dons' second strike in their 5-0 rout over the Binos.
Ryan Christie was a runaway success during his loan stay with Aberdeen but Adam Montgomery failed to make an impact during a dreary 21/22 campaign. And supporters en route to Stirling displayed a flag which urged Dave Cormack to stop taking players from Glasgow's east end. But their criticism doesn't chime with Goodwin who already wants to secure Scales on a long-term deal.
He said last month: “I’m a big fan of the loan market as it gives you the opportunity to sign players that you would maybe not normally be able to afford. The size of club we are we want to be signing players on permanent contracts. That conversation was had with Celtic initially. We wanted to know what the number was and could we make it happen. Celtic are not willing to sell Liam at this moment.
“That’s fair enough because he is their player, and he is on a long-term contract until 2025. Certainly we will enter into those discussions in January if Liam has the kind of success we expect him to have here.
“Hopefully he is enjoying his time at Aberdeen and will want to sign on with us. That is by the by just now. The players that we have signed are good ones. We need to use the loan market as we see fit and we’ll do that.”
