Abbie Chatfield has opened up about the at-time “disgusting” price of being a public figure while recalling a “creepy” fan interaction that left her questioning whether to leave her hometown.
Abbie reflected on the experience during an episode of her It’s A Lot podcast, saying her celebrity status can bring a “disgusting invasion of privacy and invasion of my space”.
“I feel this really gross inequality in the level of parasocial relationship when people are fans of mine and they come up to me and they don’t tell me they know who I am,” Abbie said.

She went on to recall one encounter where an overzealous fan “insinuated herself” into a night out with her partner Adam Hyde, saying the pair were “literally kissing” when the fan “pok[ed] her head around”.
“She was like: ‘God, I’d love a relationship like that. [I] love this relationship, you guys are so cute’,” Abbie recalled. “She then latched onto us all night, she came and sat with my friends, she came outside to the smokers’ areas, she followed us around all night.”
The fan later sat herself in the middle of a private booth Abbie and Adam were sharing, she recalled.
Abbie said the woman didn’t tell her she was a fan until an hour and a half later, after “telling me what content I should do”. The former reality star said the woman refraining from telling her she was a fan was “f**king creepy”.
“Don’t omit that you know me in an attempt to seem like you are cool about meeting me,” Abbie said. “What you are doing there is you’re lying about the level at which you know me and that’s creepy as f**k.”

Abbie stressed that the majority of her fan interactions, like taking photos or chit-chatting, are fine, but that ones like that in her story happen often enough to impact her mental health, including being “paranoid for the next month” after an “intense” encounter.
“That happens maybe like one out of five times when I go out. It’s not uncommon,” Abbie said while breaking down in tears.
“It feels really stupid to cry about. It’s like now I can’t go out and have normal socialisation with my friends,” she added.
“I just have a huge issue with people coming up and putting me in a position where I either have to be a complete c***, or I have to have my night absorbed by a stranger… This is why I don’t leave the house.”
When resharing the clip to her Instagram on Tuesday, Abbie said situations like this have made her consider moving out of Sydney.
“I was asked a question about whether I’m moving out of Sydney. The short answer is I’m looking at it. The long answer is that fan interactions like the one I described are draining me, creating a paranoid fear of leaving the house,” Abbie wrote.
Abbie has opened up about her fame and mental health in the past, saying last year that the hate she receives is “really exhausting” and opening about a “f**king scary” phone call she received after her phone number was leaked.
